In December 2008, a devastating environmental disaster occurred in Kinston, Tennessee.
The dam of a reservoir, which for years absorbed ash from the local coal-fired power station, ruptured under the load. Millions of cubic metres of black sludge poured over the region like a tidal wave, destroying houses and turning once-thriving local rivers into dead zones for fish.
This shocking event drew attention to the dangers of storing ash with a high water content and sparked an urgent discussion about safety and environmental protection.

Bridging gaps is never easy, especially when you take on the mammoth task of building one of the largest suspension bridges in the US. Building a bridge over the mile wide channel of Puget Sound had become of paramount importance, as it was becoming difficult for the present structure to sustain the voluminous surge in traffic. Intended initially for 60,000 vehicles in a day, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was now a pathway to more than 90,000 vehicles per day. The need of the hour was a newer, stronger and bigger bridge connecting Washington Mainland and the Olympic Peninsula.

After a three-week trek by ship and 16 km, Associated Concrete Pumping’s (Associated) Putzmeister 70-Meter, the world’s largest truck-mounted concrete boom pump, arrived in San Diego harbor from Aichtal, Germany. Soon after its arrival, the “Juggernaut” as the pump is often referred to, took concrete placement to the extreme on the Oakland Touchdown (OTD) – Phase 1 section of the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge project, helping to place 1,988m³, along with Associated’s 63- and 46-Meter boom pumps.

The highway is the major commercial corridor between Arizona, Nevada and Utah as well as on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) route between Mexico and Canada.
